Locals making a name for themselves

BY: Keith DeFiebre, Monterey Herald :: A number of local junior racers have been tearing it up this past year in cyclo-cross. Among them is both Logan Loader and Jeremy Blalock, who have both have raced well and are involved in quite a tussle to distinguish who will reign supreme. Early in the season, it was Blalock having the best form after a solid road and mountain bike showing. However, the tenacious Loader has responded with some great rides late in the season, winning the junior division title of the Surf City series held in Santa Cruz

But nothing compared to what Loader did a few weeks ago, winnning three medals in one weekend alone. The highlight came in the gold division of the District Championship race held in Sacramento. Loader also won the CCCX Series race, finishing off with a bronze medal in the Mens B division.

Loader was at it again last weekend, winning the CCCX race, with a one minute, 30 second seperation over Blalock.

Blalock has been very consistant and shown above average results for being just 14-years-old. After winning a national mountain bike championship in September, Blalock posted two straight wins in the CCCX series. He also won the FICA Championship junior 18 & under race held at the Watsonville fairgrounds.

Not just for the kids

Carmel resident Beverly Chaney has also found good fortune this cycling season, winning the national mountain bike championship in the sport division at Mammouth Mountain in September.

Riding her new Felt cyclo-cross bicycle, Chaney has ripped off four straight wins in the CCCX series and now sits atop the points total in her division. She also placed a fine second at the Bay Area Super Prestige Series race.

New kid on the block

Monterey's Tania Lokmagozian has shown incredible riding abilities and fitness this seson, winning four straight races in the CCCX cyclo-cross series to grab a strong grip on the series championship.

The daughter of a local mountain biking legend, Lokmagozian is quickly making a name for herself. And she is all of 11-years old.

Keeping fit this winter

Racers are always looking for ways to keep on their game during the winter months, and cyclo-cross racing is perfect for winter conditioning.

There is still the Saturday morning group ride that commences downtown Monterey at 7 a.m., and the Tuesday night winter ride which starts at Winning Wheels at 5:30 p.m.
