BACK ON TOP: SEYMOUR SCOOPS FOURTEENTH CROSS TITLE
By: Shane Stokes, IrishCycling.com :: Thirteen months after Roger Aiken bought an end to his unbeaten winning streak in the national cyclo cross championships, Robin Seymour returned to the top when he secured his fourteenth gold medal in the event today. The Team WORC rider and Aiken were essentially neck and neck for almost all of the seven lap off-road race in Corcagh Park in Clondalkin, each opening up small but short-lived gaps on the other during the exciting contest.
Seymour finally broke the elastic on the final lap, entering the technically-demanding singletrack section ahead of his Banbridge CC rival and managing to establish a race-winning lead.
The 34 year old raced home to a much-savoured win, with Aiken easing back once he knew the gold medal was beyond him to cross the line 26 seconds down. Lewis Ferguson (Team BHB) outsprinted Niall Davis (IMBRC) for the bronze medal some four seconds later, while Philip Roche and James McCluskey finished fifth and sixth. Their results combined with that of Seymour to net Team WORC their second consecutive team title.
Seymours win today continues what has been a remarkable record in off-road competition. He has now won fourteen cyclo-cross titles, twelve consecutive mountainbike cross country gold medals and one downhill national championship.
Robert Lamont (XMTB), Mark McKinley (Newry Wheelers) and Tarja Owens (Team WORC) were first veteran, junior and woman respectively.
