PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 25, 2005) - The Liberty Mutual U.S. National Cyclo-cross Championships announced today that the Providence Biltmore Hotel will serve as race headquarters.
"Great events need great hotels," said Lyle Fulkerson, operations director. "We feel the host hotel is almost as important as the race venue. This is where our riders, the media, the sponsors, and the spectators will spend a lot of time. And the Providence Biltmore is a gem."
The 291-room "Grand Dame" hotel, which in its heyday featured big band greats Benny Goodman and Jimmy Dorsey, has been recently restored to its original 1920s splendor and boasts of having the largest sleeping rooms in the state. The hotel's amenities include a McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant, a full-service Red Door Spa, and one of the largest Starbucks in America.
Hal Barth, the Providence Biltmore's director of sales and marketing, lobbied for the host hotel designation and is looking forward to creating a positive environment for the cyclists. "We're excited to host these national caliber cyclists at the Providence Biltmore," said Barth. "We appreciate that the sport of cyclo-cross is hard. We can't win the race for them, but we'll certainly work to make the rest of their Providence experience enjoyable."
Cyclists and their families will appreciate the Providence Biltmore Hotel's central location, just minutes from the racecourse. The downtown hotel is walking distance from the Providence Place Mall, the Amtrak Station, and the Bank of America skating rink. Cyclists will especially appreciate the hotel's proximity to Federal Hill, where some of the best pasta this side of the Atlantic can be found.
"Cyclists and fans, prepare to be pampered," said Gail Dalton, hospitality coordinator.
The Providence Biltmore has established special discounted rates for this event. For more information, visit www.cyclocrossnationals.com.
